Participant Demographics

Who does the treatment target?

99% of participants live bellow the poverty line.

Earning less than $20,000 per year.

66% of the mothers do not have a high school diploma.

Or GED equivilent.

19% of the families are currently homless.

Mostly living in shelters.

19% of the mother's have previously lost custody of a child.

Increasing the risk of future maltreatment.

"Nobody else acknowledges it, not my mom, her grandmother, not her father… and they look at me like I’m abnormal, because my mother was never affectionate, she never did that. They look at me like I’m crazy, you know? Ugh. You’re watching people checking you out… (you’re watching and how they respond… it tells you something important) yeah like, if they don’t respond maybe I wasn’t doing as good of a job as I thought I was, you know? It’s nice to be told I’m doing a good job, to get a pat on the back, you know?”

“At home there’s no one to appreciate. Here, they appreciate what I’m doing with Child 1. Here, they are here to see the smile that comes out of her face when I do something and she laughs. That’s it, like, they’re looking for it to see; they are there to notice the smile and when you bond with your kids. At home, things go unnoticed – the hugs, the smiles.

“I was going to give up cause there would be times that I couldn't handle my son, or I wouldn’t have money to get here, or there were times when me and the kids were literally homeless, so I would miss a week or like almost a month. On certain days like this one I have like 10 appointments at one time. And, you know… nobody else helps me, nobody else has a hand. And, I think to myself, like sometimes I literally go crazy cause I’m like doing all this by myself… like how?

Interpreting the Data and Measurements

How is the reasearch collected and on what scales are improvements measured?

Adverse Childhood Experiences Score (ACE)

ACEs are measured on a 1-10 scale and are scored based on the number of traumas suffered before the age of 18.

Parent Stress Level

This value is determined by a survey completed by parents in the study measuring how many 'stressors' and challenges they are experiencing on a daily basis that may affect the wellbeing of their child and their parent-child relationship.

Parent Child Relationship Score

The stressor checklist is a long questionaire that measures how many daily 'stressors' a parent is dealing with. It identifies a range of challenges that could be occuring in and out of the home.
